Mayor Push Increase Sales Tax
Updated: Nov 11, 2019
When the Mayor tried to push an increased sales tax a few years ago, he reached out to my boss, Ald. Donovan, and asked for his help in securing the support of State Legislators. Many would have supported this if the Mayor had made some compromises, like agreeing to drop any expansion plans for the streetcar and to stop trying to move funds from the MPD to the Office of Violence Prevention, but he refused to compromise. Now he has pushed us into a desperate situation. The office of Mayor is non-partisan for a reason, most importantly so that he can work with both sides of the aisle when dealing with representatives at other levels of government, but this Mayor has burned so many bridges through his hyper-partisan politics that we will never get a fair shake from the State as long as he is in office.
